Product Description
More durable than ever and equipped with easy-to-use features, the Platypus Big Zip SL Hands Free Hydration Reservoir is the premium, taste-free Platypus hydration system. An easy-to-clean (and fill) wide mouth opening and SlideLock closure give the Big Zip a watertight seal that also functions as a carrying handle. A Quick-Disconnect hose makes refilling a snap, as you don't have to unthread your drinking tube every time. Change any backpack into a hands-free hydration solution with the Big Zip SL, available in both 2L and 3L sizes.

5 out of 5 stars platypus big zip sl   June 4, 2010

Recently sent in an original platypus thunderhead bladder that was seven plus years old. The plastic had started to delaminate creating a pinhole leak that rendered the bladder unusable. Cascade Designs sent this 100oz/3L with no questions asked. I have only tested this in the house but so far have been pleased with the upgrades (upgrades to me anyway). The zip top is solid and can only go on one way which I assume limits the chances of it sliding off in your pack. I like the quick connect as I'll be able to leave the hose threaded through the straps on my primary work pack. Other then that it's a solid bladder with no BPA(I am taking the company's word here as my BPA test kit was stolen recently by panda bears, they did send me a brand new bladder so I'm still inclined to trust them). The only possible drawback that I can see is that there is no separate cap for the male end of the hose once disconnected from the quick release. My work backpack tends to get pretty filthy as a wildland firefighter and as someone paranoid about potable water think this would be a nice feature.

4 out of 5 stars Bought it to replace a Camelbak bladder   May 21, 2010

I bought the Platypus to replace a 2-year old Camelbak bladder that had gotten all chemical-tasting on me. This one was an improvement- I didn't taste the plastic until the water had been in the bladder for about 16 hours, and even then it was slight.

I'm not sure I love the zip-top closure- the Camelbak's twist-on closure felt more secure. I do like the on/off mechanism of the mouthpiece though. You just twist the mouthpiece. The Camelbak has a little lever that I could never remember what position was open and what was closed. Compared to the Camelbak, the bladder isn't as pliable, but I don't feel a difference when the backpack is on my back.

If you're going to be using this in a Camelbak pack, know that the top (where the closure is) is just a little bit too wide, so you'll have to angle it in order to close the backpack. There's no hook on top to keep it upright in your pack. Problem solved- I took the cheapy hose clip from the Platypus (it's the type of clip you'd use to clip a work ID badge to your shirt) and used that to clip the top of the bag to the loop in the Camelbak. You could also do this with a zip tie or a velcro strip.

All in all, I'm happier with the Platypus than I was with the Camelbak bladder, mostly because the water tastes so much better. Even my dog refused to drink the Camelbak water on a hot day, it tasted so bad. Now we're both a lot happier. I'll give an update if this changes so you'll have an idea of how long this bladder will last.

5 out of 5 stars Great Water System   April 28, 2010

I bought the 3 liter version of the Big Zip and highly recommend it. I also carry a nalgene 2 liter water bottle for my immediate drinking water and don't use the hose or bite valve. I keep the Big Zip empty in my Golite Jam 2 until I'm almost ready to make camp. I try to find a stream or other water source and fill it for my overnight cooking, drinking and cleaning needs. It is easy to fill, seal and carry. I've never had any problem with leaks. I use the carry cord to hang it from a tree branch for easy access.

5 out of 5 stars Water on the go!   May 15, 2009

We got the 3 liter Platy bladders as a replacement for the 2 liter bladders that came with our hiking packs. What a difference! That extra liter really comes in handy on hot, cold or dry days. I also appreciate that this bladder doesn't impart a funky taste to our water like the original bladder did. I love the large Zip opening... really makes filling and cleaning very easy (although the anti-microbial treatment means I don't have to clean it often).
